LED lighting systems spec “busted” – benefits and potential to be in focus at Light Insight Arabia conference

The benefits and mechanics of switching over to LED lighting, its effectiveness as a cost & energy saver, the technology‘s transformational potential in the world of lighting and avoiding misconceptions will be among the key topics under discussion at the upcoming Light Insight Arabia conference taking place in Dubai next month.

The conference is being organised by Epoc Messe Frankfurt in association with Lux Review magazine and will take place alongside Light Middle East 2013, being held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 7th to 9th October. Featuring a high-powered panel of lighting industry thought leaders and experts, the conference is expected to be one of the popular attractions at Light Middle East 2013.

LED lighting solutions are increasingly being seen as the future of lighting. Putting together an LED lighting project includes the specification of the performance of the product. As with many emerging technologies, it can be hard to specify and choose the best components to fulfil the requirements set. The main reason being that there are no standards available. Lack of standards can easily lead to varying interpretations of performance by different suppliers and this may mean that an incorrect or non-optimal component is chosen. This will be the key theme throughout the conference and will be addressed in panel discussions and case studies.

“The Light Insight Arabia conference provides a valuable interactive platform for industry experts and regional trade visitors and professionals to examine and evaluate the latest technologies that could transform the industry,” said Ahmed Pauwels, Chief Executive Officer, Epoc Messe Frankfurt. “With the introduction of Dragon‘s Den at the conference, we are encouraging the advancement of innova-tive lighting technology. Overall, the exhibition and conference is a key meeting point for profession-als working within the regional lighting design industry and aims to promote its ongoing progression.”

New to the conference for 2013 will be the Project Uncovered series focusing on projects from Al Bahar Towers in Abu Dhabi and the Qatar National Convention Centre to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, covering concept through to development. David McNeil of dpa Lighting Consultants will present on the challenges of installing a complex lighting system with a case study of Abu Dhabi's iconic Hyatt Capital Gate Building.

The 35-storey gravity defying contours of the Capital Gate building are a symbol of cutting-edge design and architecture. Housing the Grand Hyatt hotel, the tower forms part of the Abu Dhabi exhibition complex and leans outwards at a 16 degree angle. As consultants, dpa Lighting were tasked with designing the lighting of the external façade and the interior public spaces.

The façade is a self supporting, highly engineered, diagrid structure. The challenge of showcasing this unique form at night, whilst adhering to the restraints of not penetrating the ‘skin' of the building or having lighting equipment visible from inside and out, was an extremely demanding design challenge. Approximately 700 colour change LED ‘pixels' have been specially integrated directly behind the outer glass surface to create a dynamic shroud of lighting that continually emulates and exaggerates the form and appearance of the tower.

David McNeil, said: “dpa were delighted to be part of the project team for this prestigious and iconic tower. Working closely with the Client, Architects and Design Team, we were able to achieve an effective and successful lighting design solution within the unique constraints of the project. The responsibility to directly influence the lit appearance of a structure of this scale at night time, and its context within Abu Dhabi's skyline is something we undertook very seriously. The project was very challenging, but also very reqarding for dpa to work with a team of dedicated professionals commit-ted to delivering the Client's vision.”
Agostino Renna, CEO of GE Lighting in Europe, the Middle East and Africa will sit down to speak one-on-one with Robert Bain of Lux Review. Renna's oveview of the current rate of transition underway in the lighting industry will be eagerly awaited by delegates. Renna will speak about the ongoing rapid transformation of the industry from traditional lighting sources to LED and also predict the direction of the market over the next five years.

Commenting on GE's participation in the conference and exhibition, Goeroge Bou Mitri, GE Light-ing's General Manager of Middle East, Africa and Turkey, said: “Light Middle East is one of the sig-nificant regional platforms for GE Lighting to showcase our diverse array of lighting solutions with a particular focus on sustainability, in line with the region's current focus on promoting energy efficien-cies in lighting.”

In a region with a large retail and hospitality sector, Chris Rimmer from ACDC will answer questions about whether LEDs pay off in retail. Rimmer's presentation will be of relevance in this market where retailers are continuously evaluating the cost benefits that LED could provide. Rimmer wil explain how solid state lighting is now able to deliver the quality that retailers need. He will examine whether the numbers do stack up in terms of return on investment, maintenance savings and energy reductions.

The overall direction of the LED market and the factors affecting it will be examined by a panel of experts who will discuss which sectors among retail, commercial, streetlighting, industrial etc., are at the tipping point in terms of LED adoption. The panelists will discuss the likely outcome of price reductions and the barriers to LED adoption. What can manufacturers do to overcome these? What can the industry do? What do clients want in terms of product, warranties and comfort factors?

Also on the agenda will be a panel discussion on the role of LED in hospitality as well as presentations on the right questions clients should ask LED suppliers before installation. Ways to manage risks arising from large LED installations will also be discussed at the conference.

The Light Insight Arabia conference will take place on the first two days of Light Middle East 2013, the region's only dedicated trade and networking gathering for lighting and design. The exhibition will also feature the inaugural Light Middle East Awards which is designed to recognise and celebrate excellence in lighting and design.
