WHERE ARE WE IN REGARDS TO OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE HAIR?
Since the first decade of this century, mass spectrometry studies have enabled the characterization of an altogether new category of hair proteins, KAPs
(Keratin Associated Proteins), which are present in the cortex of the hair and in the cuticle. These proteins have very low molecular weights (from 8,000
to 25,000 daltons), 6 times smaller than the proteins that make up keratin.
We can divide them into 3 main families: High Sulfur (HS), Ultra High Sulfur (UHS) and High Glycine Tyrosine (HGT).

WHAT IS THE EXACT ROLE THEY PLAY?
Nestled around keratin, they play a fundamental role by forming a network of links that consolidate it. If you think of a hair as a building, you could say that KAPs are the concrete and keratin is the metal framework. The quantity of the KAPs is decisive for the fiber’s structural cohesion and the foundation of the hair’s internal fabric.

ARE THERE ANY TYPES OF PATHOLOGY ASSOCIATED WITH KAPS?
No. The synthesis of KAPs is progressive in space and time, taking place at the bulb during the hair’s growth phase (0.3mm per day). On the other hand, when the hair is mistreated and becomes damaged we literally see a gradual drop in the number of KAPs in the hair strand.

DOES THAT HAVE A DIRECT IMPACT ON THE STRUCTURE?
Inevitably, since KAPs account for 50%-60% of the structure of the hair.
The keratin filaments break apart so the keratin no longer has any support.
Little by little the structure erodes and then collapses.
