Olay’s Multi-Decade & Ethnicity Study explores the science around being AGELESS and is Olay’s largest-ever clinical research study conducted in partnership with Dr. Alexa Kimball of Harvard Medical School and more than a dozen other independent research institutions and companies. The latest MDE study findings are being presented at AAD (4-8 March 2016) Washington DC and focus on the link between sun exposure and skin ageing.   

Dr. Alexa Kimball of Harvard Medical School concluded women who avoided the sun and used UV protection were more likely to be Exceptional Skin Agers - proving that lifestyle and skincare, and especially sun-safe behaviour, can make a  major difference to appearance.      

Olay consumer research has already identified a gap in what women know around the key role sun exposure plays in facial skin ageing and in their actions to protect their skin year-round.  The research shows 50% of women in the US don’t use a daily sunscreen, that’s despite 67% recognising the daily damage the sun is doing to their skin.3  

Three other abstracts, outside of the MDE study, but also being presented by Olay scientists at AAD looked in more detail at why women aren’t using daily sunscreens - and how the effects of UV damage might be best mitigated.   

An Olay abstract identified the reasons why women aren’t acting to protect their facial skin with SPF are because (1) they don’t think they need it daily, (2) they believe they get it already from their make-up, (3)  SPF moisturisers feel heavy / greasy /sticky and aren’t for wearing under make-up.4

But the good news shown in another Olay abstract is that the effects of UV damage can be mitigated by using a daily moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF once a day5.  Further, that the right product formulation is critical to drive daily use of SPF products.

A further and final piece of Olay research also being presented at AAD revealed that the penta-peptide PAL-KTTKS reduced UV damage to skin cell viability and function in vitro; effects which can be related to possible prevention of photo-damage and photo-ageing6
