• Bronze medal in Glasgow for Slovenian
• Portuguese rider just 1' off overall win

News | Team – 7th August 2022

Tadej Pogačar took 3rd place in the World Championships Road Race in Glasgow today.

The Slovenian rider showed good form off the back of the Tour de France to form part of an elite group which developed inside the final 80km of the 271km course.

The race was stopped for almost an hour due to protests on the route but got underway again, with the group whittling down on the highly technical city-centre course.

Mathieu Van Der Poel took an impressive solo win, with Wout Van Aert and Pogacar behind in a chasing group at 1’45’’.
At the end of the 6 hour battle, Pogačar outsprinted Mads Pedersen to narrowly take the bronze medal.

Fellow UAE Team Emirates rider Matteo Trentin was involved in a crash with a barrier, suffering a hand injury and unable to finish the race.

Pogačar : “It was a really crazy race today. We all expected that it was going to be like a criterium race for 6 hours and that’s exactly what it was. The speed through the corners and on the climbs was insane and thankfully I was on a good day. I was quite humbled to be in such good company on the final laps but Van der Poel was on another level today so he really deserved this victory. I can be very satisfied with bronze today.”

After a week of intense racing, Almeida’s tenacity on the road earned him a well-deserved spot on the podium behind race winner Matej Mahoric (Bahrain-Victorious).

The final stage sprint on day 7 took the riders from Zabrze to Kraków (166.6km) with Tim Merlier (Soudal Quickstep) taking the win.

The result for Almeida tops of a solid week for the Emirati squad.

Not to be overshadowed, Rafal Majka, thrilled the home crowd with an impressive stage win on Polish soil. Majka’s victory on stage 3 served as a shining moment for the team, further highlighting their impressive performance throughout the race.

Moreover, UAE Team Emirates excelled in the teams classification, securing the top position. The cohesive teamwork and relentless effort of the entire squad played a pivotal role in their outstanding success.

Almeida: “I’m satisfied with 2nd place and it gives me morale for the Vuelta España. For the bonus seconds I had to try at least. I gave it a go in the sprint for the bonus seconds but it didn’t work, in the end it was fun and I’m still happy. We won the stage with Rafal and the team classification also so we can be very satisfied.”
