A sneak peek into what to expect from IKEA in terms of brand collaboration and limited collections ahead of its catalogue launch in August
Dubai, UAE, July 17, 2018: Ahead of the UAE Catalogue launch, IKEA, the much-loved Swedish furniture retailer, has showcased a sneak peek of its upcoming global collections and products – and introduced some of its exciting collaborations with world-renowned brands at Democratic Design Days, held annually in Älmhult, Sweden. IKEA has also announced new commitments that are set to inspire and enable sustainable living - making it easier for people to reduce their climate impact and contribute to a world without waste.
Exciting and inspirational collaborations will also be introduced for next year, for 2019-2020 collections, including Lego and Adidas as being the key collaborators, alongside Stefan Diez, Little Sun, UNYQ with Area Academy, and cultural hub Saint Heron.
Available worldwide from August 2018, IKEA together with its partners have created concepts to work across entire homes rather than individual rooms to fully engage people. With a focus from lavish to minimalist, there are six new collections, each telling their own story and expressing their own personality.
With a special focus on sustainability, in terms of environmental practices and cultural integrity, IKEA collections focus on stabilising environments outside and inside the home. The TÄNKVÄRD collection lends itself to elements of fluidity, a certain way of living, which focuses on earthly elements such as rattan, cotton, linen, jute and seagrass. All elements fuelled by flexibility and sustainability. Working with artisans from India, Akanksha Deo, the collection’s designer, explores various handicraft techniques for bespoke home furnishings.
Following a similar theme, the ÖVERALLT collection, a product of collaboration from ten African designers and four IKEA designers. The collection is a partnership spanning continents and disciplines. Integrating culture with design, the collection aims to breathe life into age old stories and traditions from the African continent.
As a response to the refugee crisis, IKEA decided to try to make a difference the best way they knew how – by creating livelihoods. Made in collaboration with the Jordan River Foundation and Jordanian refugee women artisans, TILLTALANDE is a collection of previous, hand-crafted textiles made by women artisans; Jordanian locals alongside refugees. The initiative is sprung from the urgent need to get people into work and into society – also a vital ingredient in an initiative to empower women in the region.
IKEA’s focus on affordable technology is brought to animation in this year’s collection with FREKVENS. The FREKVENS collection makes technology accessible and easy to use, when put in the hands of a teenager. An integrated light and sound system, apt to boost the atmosphere of a mediocre house party, IKEA enables teens to conjure their imaginations to reality with their new technology collection.
IKEA also delves into creating fashionable home furnishing solutions with the FÖRNYAD collections. It focuses on tailoring items in accordance with student needs in fun, and in fashion. The collection comes from Sarah Andelman and Craig Redman. Sarah, a pioneer in formulating lifestyle retail experiences, has collaborated with brands such as Chanel, Hermes, Nike and Adidas.
IKEA has produced a collection which solely focuses on artistic expressions; the IKEA Art Event 2019 collection, brings together eight contemporary artists to produce off the wall art pieces which could embellish any home. Finally, IKEA, staying true to its heritage, has produced a collection which takes into consideration its Scandinavian heritage to give birth to a collection with maximalist motifs, the collection is produced by the iconic artist, Per B Sundberg.
